What a wonderful surprise for San Francisco readers of Vogue to open the December 2009 issue and see the interior of Alexis and Trevor Traina’s beautiful Pacific Heights home.

In “Ode To Joy,” written by the great Hamish Bowles, we learn how the Traina’s “tapped into San Francisco’s design history—and the talents of iconic family friends—to create a dramatic setting for their young family.”

It may be one of the more romantic interior design stories one has read. Alexis, whose “cameo looks seem fashioned for a John Singer Sargent canvas,” according to Bowles’ estimation, says that “for Trevor and me, the house was a shameless love poem to each other.” Quite lovely.

The young couple clearly had many ideas for the home (Trevor, for instance, wanted the entrance gallery to suggest “the idea of a grand entrance in a Venetian palazzo leading up to the piano nobile“), and were assisted by family and friends who happen to be at the top of their fields: Alexis’ godfather, the decorator Thomas Britt, and family friend Ann Getty.

Of course, design watchers will enjoy the captions, which give all the little details on wants. We learn, for instance, that the Trainas achieved the look above, with music chairs by Ann Getty & Associates; Andrew Fisher abalone-topped tables; some 18th-century grotto furniture found at Newel, NYC; a photograph by Alec South entitled “The Seneca”; a chandelier from Coleen & Company, L.A; and flowers by Torryne Choate.

Interior designer Thomas Britt’s bravura drawing-room scheme features velvet from Venice-based textile maven Sabina Fay Braxton’s. Hiroshi Sugimoto’s “Queen Elizabeth II, 1999,” is flanked by works by Christopher Williams and John Baldessari.
